Hi
I currently have a Canon EF 70-200 F2.8 L non IS with a 1.4 extender, i tend to shoot wildlife not sports and am considering the Sigma 120-300mm f2.8 EX DG HSM instead of the Canon.
I know very little about it have read a few reviews but would like an honest appraisal from someone with experience of the lens please.

Raider you missed a right bargain the other day mate. One sold on ebay in great nick for £630. I think they're over £2k new.

Hi, i have recently bought one of these lenses (within the lat month). I use it for shooting sport and absolutely love the lens, i was previously using a canon 70-200 2.8 IS.
AF is really fast to lock onto the subject and the lens itself is very sharp. It is quite a heavy lens so maybe be advisable to use a monopod when shooting, having said that the last match i did, i used it handheld and it wasn't too bad. The only other thing that i have noticed is that compared to the canon 70-200 2.8 IS, the zoom ring is quite a bit stiffer to operate, but you will soon get used to this.
The lens also works well with the canon 1.4 extender, AF is still quick up to f4 and there is very little degradation to the overall IQ.

Thank you very much, i have heard that there can be focusing issues and it can take a while to find the best way to shoot with it, would love f2.8 @ 300mm that is my main reason for buying.

I have found that you cant focus track while zooming, so you need to zoom, recompose then focus, again takes a little getting used to but not a major problem

Couldn't see it when doing a worldwide search for completed listings.

The 120-300 often sells for over £ 1000.

Its easy to confuse with the 120-400.

I could not find it either, the older IF version with a few marks seems to sell for around 1k

It was definately the right one andrew. I was tempted to buy it just to sell it on. I was watching it for about 3 hours as when i first looked there was only 1 bid of £515 or something like that. 2 late bidders and pushed it over the £600 mark. The only reason i never bid was because i was expecting it to go through the £1k barrier near the end and at the time i wasn't too sure how much they were worth second hand as one was for sale on here for £800 or there about. It was only when i read the description of the one on here i noted it was in a bit of a mess.

Disagree with that I'm afraid. Shooting motorsport, I can track using AI Servo while zooming out (usually) and get tack sharp results.

Simon.
