Has anyone got any experience of using the Sigma 120-300mm f2.8 and/or the Sigma 300mm f2.8 with 1.4x and 2x convertors?

Thanks - Simon.

the x2 I found almost unusable with the 120-300 although someone will be along wiht a stunning shot no doubt... the 1.4 with the sigma was about usable but certainly a noticable loss of image quality...

I would disagree, the 1.4 is very usable, but it will slow focusing down a bit - I would venture a very slight loss in IQ when wide open, but its a pixel peeping thing in my experience. I had heard a LOT of bad reports about using it with a x2, so combined with losing more stoppage, opted to stick to the 1.4

However, a word of warning - sigma TC's do have a tendency to work loose internally...mine did several times and that was when the IQ loss is very noticable. However, its easy enough to remove outer mounting pate and tighten the offending screws behind and i have now applied loctite type stuff to mine and its been fine since.

I'll echo what Kipax has said... although I only briefly used a 2x on the 120-300, so in my opinion I didn't really give it a fair test. Sharpness was ok, but AF was just too slow for sports work, fine for birding I'd imagine though.

I did use the 120-300 with a Kenko PRO 300 1.4x converter and again it suppressed the AF for sports but the sharpness was fantastic.

My friend has a Sigma 300mm and I found it to be slightly sharper than the 120-300 (but honestly, hardly detectable) and the AF was more responsive but not used it with a 1.4x and 2x - I'm aware he has a 1.4x and a 2x so hopefully he can shed some light on the matter if he see's this

Thanks for the feedback.

I would also be interested in opinions of the Canon 300mm f2.8 with 1.4x & 2x convertors. I don't really want to spend £3k plus, even though the mrs has told me just to get it! There is no point in getting a set up I will be disappointed with either.

Thanks - Simon.

yer kidding... the 300 with 1.4 or x2 are made for each other... Have a look here at some of my cricket with a 300 and x2 converter. You can imagine how far away I am it being cricket :)

I've been happy with the results when I've used a 1.4 telex with a 300mm f2.8.

Yes, lots. What do you want to know exactly?

The Sigma 300mm f2.8 prime works very well with a 1.4x and a 2x, not tried the 120-300 to comment.

I just wanted to know if the Sigma lens work well with the 1.4x and 2x (particularly the 2x) convetors.

I'm another '120-300 with 1.4xTC' fan...as always, technique is the key to getting the best out of that combo
