sigma 120-300mm

No, but a new IS version is due out sometime soon.

Not sure of the release date or price though but it will be EXPENSIVE.
 
No, the stabilised versions are labeled OS.

only have a 70-300mm canon that only goes to 4.5 i think,

so will be alot better

sorry to keep asking about lenes but a friend has just phoned and has seen in a shop a SIGMA 70-200mm F2.8 APO now i know that it will not be long enough really but if i brought a extension tube to go with that will that do the same job as the 300mm,

or shall i wait to another 300mm lens comes up forsale

As a single body user a 120-300 will give a better shooting range, although slightly limiting at the shorter(120mm) around the penalty area. With shorter pitches it would be possible to capture (with reasonable quality) shots from the opposite end. Depending on the crop factor (full frame, 1.3x or 1.6x) this can vary somewhat.

70-200mm is prefered by many as its more varsatile but you would certainly not be able to capture anything further than half way line. Adding a convertor will reduce your lens to f4 (x1.4) or f5.6 (x2) thus defeating the point of buying an f2.8 lens. Also you need to think about fitting and removing during the game and any action missed while doing so.

Only you can answer which will be the better option for you. If you intend to stick with a single body then 120-300 may be the best option but if you intend to ultimately use two bodies the 70-200 may be the way to go.

I've owned two of the non IS and only just sold the last one (bought newer IS version). Price wise expect to pay between £1200-1500 depending on condition.

One point worth mentioning is parts availability with Canon. This lens is now third generation. Canon informed me last year parts are still available but other report they are not. TBH they rarely go wrong and providing it is looked after (not dropped) it shouldnt be a problem.
