I bought a nikon 55-200 but it just wasnt good enough at the top end so thinking about a better long lens for motorsport etc

i will prob find a mint second hand one but trying to decide between the two

120-400mm f/4.5-5.6 prob wont need the 400 end but i suspect better to have it and not need it.

or

100-300 f/4 seems a perfect range etc but nearly double the price

what would you guys recomend between them or any other lenses to recomend

J

It really depends on your budget.

There's been alot of praise for the sigma 120-400mm due to its value for money price tag, although there has been quality issues with this lens, ask Stewart from lensesforhire, but for £600 new it will get you up and running. (used price around £500).

The sigma 100-300mm f4 highly rated, fast focusing, constant f4 through the zoom range, takes a 1.4x TC well (OK no OS but not needed for motorsport), probably one of sigma's best lenses along with the 120-300mm f2.8 but as you said twice the price.

There are other lenses I would recommend, but these would probably be outside you budget contraints

Hhhmm decisions might be worth me hireing one then it might help my decision

I own a 100-300mm F4 + 1.4x TC combo, works very well IMO. Very sharp images without the TC on, and sharp images in the right conditions with the TC.

Taken today with the TC on...

The 100-300 is from Sigma's EX range which is their premium range. The 120-400 isn't.

I have the 100-300 and its been my main motorsport lens for the last few years. Its as good as the Canon 100-400 and between half and a full stop faster. It takes a x1.4TC moderately well, but since getting a 7D I prefer to crop rather than use one.

Thinking about airshows, are you saying the 100-300 with 1.4TC is better at the 400mm end, than the 120-400 at the 400mm end.
