Has anyone got / used a Sigma 120-400mm f/4.5-5.6 DG OS HSM ?
I just wondered how it performs as i'm looking into maybe buying one .
I take it that there wouldn't be any issues on my canon 40D other than the sensor crop factor ?

I had one briefly a few years ago. Slow to focus, bad CA and soft. I got rid pronto.

Maybe it was the 135-400 you had with those problems?

The 120-400 I, and many others by reading reviews online and in magazines, had was very sharp for the price and very fast to focus (HSM motor). Maybe the focus thing is because of the Nikon build-in focus motor?

Andrew, I think the 120-400 HSM is quite a new lens, gets good reviews but I have never used one in anger TBH.

oops! You're quite right - just checked it was the 135-400mm. Sorry! Just to show I'm not anti-Sigma I now have a 120-300mm f/2.8 and it's a cracker! Also the 150mm macro is good I use that too. :)

I've been using this lens for almost a year. I've used it mostly for motorsport and african wildlife and it's been brilliant (on a 50D and 30D body). It focuses quickly has controlled CA and good colour reproduction.

It is heavy - I've taken to using a monopod recently! It also takes up a lot of bag space (both of those things will be true of big lenses anyway!). Stabilastion is a bit loud !

Thanks guys after reading a few reviews and Greennija's comments i've splashed out and are now £600 lighter in my bank . Should be with me on Tuesday .

John, I know you've already bought the lens, but if you want to see the sort of images you can get with a Sigma 120-400mm and a 40D, have a look at my Flickr pages (link in my signature). It's a great lens for the money, and, providing you work within it's limitations, it will provide you with awesome images. I tend to treat mine as an f7.1 lens above about 250mm, as wide open at longer focal lenghths the IQ really drops off.

That's about the only criticism I can level at it though, and when you take the price into account, it's a fairly minor complaint. I'm more than happy with mine
