Hi,

I've found a Sigma 135-400mm at a very good price (£299) and I'm considering buying. I'll be the first to admit I'm impatient and want a new lens soon.

Can people just give me their thoughts on the Sigma 135-400mm f/4.5-5.6 APO DG please?

- Have you got one? What do you think?
- What similar lenses are out there, and should I instead get a Canon or
Tamron?
- Would you buy this lens?

Reference: http://www.ephotozine.com/article/sigma-135-400mm-f-4-5-5-6-dg-aspherical-interchangeable-lens-review-4477 (I'm not buying from this site, just thought it gave plenty of information about the lens)

Thanks

Mike

Hi Mike

In answer to your question, no I wouldn't buy this lens if I had the money for something better, but that's not always possible in which case would probably get something with a shorter max focal distance.
Could look at the Tamron 70-300 VC for roughly the same money or pay more and get a s/hand Sigma 120-400mm OS for about an extra 150 quid or less

The Canon equivalent would be the 100-400mm IS which much more expensive or the 70-300 IS at approx the same cost

all the above lenses have stabilisation and it does come in very useful (although not vital especially with a tripod) at these longer focal lengths, main reason that would steer me away from the lens you enquired about

Cheers
Rich

Personally, I would definitely save for used 120-400OS or an old 80-400OS.

The 80-400 is slightly sharper with a greater focal length range, but has no HSM (neither does the 135-400).
