Morning all

I've just bought the above for my 40d, didn't have the funds to go for a tokina etc, but my question is about the use of filters, I understand they use gel based ones.

I have the cokin p system at home mainly for nd filters, other than this how else can you use nd filters with this lens?

Hi,

I used one few years ago mounted on a Nikon D200 (APS-C).

It's well built and it's sharp lens at almost every aperture and focal but unfortunately it's subject to an important flare due to its curved front glass. Other cons : it's quite heavy and cumbersome.

I used one briefly, also on a d200. In fact it was so brief, I forgot all about it until I read an eBay review I did on the lens when I had it.

I don't think I was that impressed.
 
I've had one for nearly 9 years and used it loads, mostly on my 5D. It has performed well and I've always been happy with it. There's no conventional way to effectively use filters on the front, as you may well have gathered. So you're left with the rear filter mount. You'll have to find some source for ND gel filters, if there's such a thing. I've never looked, nor have I ever tried any filter on it.

If you wanted to get experimental and adventurous then you could cut a piece to size out of a Cokin [or cheaper], remove the mount from the lens and space it accordingly to fit.

There is an alternative. I have what is possibly the lens cover - I'm not sure as I haven't used it in years. It's a sleeve which slides over the lens and takes a standard type lens cap, which I probably have laying around somewhere. The sleeve is threaded - possibly 80mm so can take a fitting or filter. Only problem is vignetting. Just the sleeve needs zooming to about 26mm to eliminate it, so fit a filter and that's all the way to 30mm. If it's not quite enough then sort it out by post processing cropping as required. It shouldn't need much. Or you could stick one of the big Cokin style ND filters directly to the sleeve with something, in which case 26mm of zoom will do it.

I've found that lee sell some strobist filters so might try them as doubt I'll need much gel.

John - I have a 14mm Sigma that has the same arrangement. I took it over to the LEE stand at focus 2011 and they said they did gel sheets that cut be cut to size. Best to contact them directly for the name, as my memory isn't working very well at this moment :)
