Hi guys, i have just purchased(and awaiting delivery of) a Sigma 150-500 OS HSM. I also have the option to get a Sigma EX 2x converter as well for a decent price. I have never used a TC so am a bit naive as to the effects this would have. Ill be using a Canon 60D. I know i will lose autofocus but i dont mind shooting in manual. Also i know IQ may/will be degraded. Any more info would greatly be appreciated.

cheers in advance
Ben

You'll have amax aperture of something like f/13 and if it's like the 50-500 you'll have to very careful not to allow the lens to retract to the short end the rear element and tc glass will collide.

I doubt you'd use it for much but it could be fun for the odd moon shot or still wildlife on a very bright day.

cheers Graham,

it was mainly going to be used as a fun item as such. My main area is aircraft photography so may get it and have a play. Will keep an eye out for the glass collision issue too.

anymore input greatly appreciated

UK weather 2x TC on a f6.3 lens forget it, manual focus, Significant drop off in IQs, you would be wasting your money

cheers for a drop of realism Pete, i did fear that may be the case

The IQ isn't that bad this was shot with my Sigma 150-500 and a 2X

and this was with 2X & 1.4 TC's together giving 1400mm, so reasonable shots are possible.

I've tried it as well, just the once mind, sigma 150-500 and the sigma 2x, results were surprisingly good as Ken shows above, the viewfinder was like the black hole of Calcutta though and in practical terms it's not something I'd do out of choice, wouldn't like to hand hold it that's for sure!

As stated. My main focus is aviation. Id be curious to see what detail i could pick up off something at 35000 feet. Still in 2 minds

Not that great for the subject you refer to above

Yea ive seen that thread. I know the disadvantages with distance and atmosphere. its mainly just for ***** and giggles when i cant get over to Manchester or wherever i choose to go.

Cheers all

Ben the 150-500 on its own will be fine for aircraft photography why not nip over to RAF Scampton to get some practice in as the Reds will be up 4 or 5 time a day now practicing, its only about 3/4 hour from our neck of the woods

I dont drive pal so days out like that are awkward unfortunately. The Siggy hasnt arrive yet. Im having a full upgrade of my kit with mpb. Although im still undecided on the bigma.

I've never used my 150-500 OS with a 2x TC. I've got a Canon MkIII 2x that wont work with the Sigma, but I have got a Kenko 1.4x Pro300 DGX that I use with it and the IQ hardly takes a hit. It wont AF but on my 7D it works out at an 1120 equivalent which is great for shooting the moon and the odd plane at distance.

When Canon release the firmware update for the 5D3 I can't wait to have a bash with the wifes Sigma 120-400 OS and the Kenko 1.4x TC on AF with my 5D3.
