Hello all......

Thinking of purchasing this lens and was just picking your brains on what you think of it and if theres anything better out there for the same price.....

To fit a Sony body, £659.95 brand new with 5 years warranty....pretty much top of my measly budget for a lens :-(

Cheers all....

Tom

A colleague of mine has one for Canon.

For the price it's a decent lens. Yes, it's not spectacular at 500mm and needs stopping down to F8-F10 to get the best from it, but what do you expect for the money? With realistic expectations it's good. No, it's not as good as a canon 100-400 or any decent quality tele prime, but it's half (or less) the price and has a wider zoom range. It will print fine up to 12x8, maybe 15x10 at a push (if you keep below 400mm).

Superb lens, great for aircraft, wildlife, OS works very well as you can shoot 4 stops lower that if it hadn't got OS, i think i shot something 1/100sec @ 350mm and it came out very good !

I have one on a Nikon D90,it is well worth the outlay giving decent enough results and as mentioned above not as good as a decent prime, but at around 10% of the price of a 500mm f/4 VR can you really go wrong?

thanks again all........

so is £659.95 abouat as cheap as it goes brand new or do you know where it can be bought for less?

Cheers

£659 is excellent for a new one.

Snap it up quickly before the price rises ;)

I got mine from One Stop Digital in Hong Kong for £628 + £15 import duty, cheapest i could find anywhere so £659 is a bargain + you have a 12 month warranty if bought in the UK.

Had one for about 6 months to use on my Nikon. Very good lens indeed - especially for the money.
Very good for wildlife/zoos etc.

Bit heavy on battery life but not unbearable.

Clifton Cameras are doing it at £749.99 with a 3 year Sigma warranty at the moment, if you want "peace of mind".

Don't know about a Sony but it works great on my Canons, superb lens for the price not much to touch it.

I've used one on both a Canon 450D and a 550D. I'm delighted with it. The image stabilisation system has been compared to witchcraft.

Thanks again all of you.....looks like the general opinion on this lens is good and it's well priced.....

Think I might have to visit the bank manager.....

Cheers

I have one on my Pentax. For the price it is excellent value for money, but you may be disapointed a little with the sharpness at 500mm at F6.3. Stop it down a bit and it will produce very sharp images. They like lots of light.
