i have a Nikon d3100 and i like to treat my self but bit confused
whats the difference

1 Sigma EX 150-500mm 5-6.3 APO HSM other sites
2 Sigma 150-500mm f5-6.3 RF DG OS
3 Sigma 150-500mm f5-6.3 APO DG OS HSM amazon
 
Think its the same lens...just not all the letters after its name:D
 
You will need the HSM model anyway as like me, you have no focus motor in the camera body. And no.3 on your list has OS, Optical Stabilisation which is really useful on a lens of this size so that is what i would go for. In fact i did! Amazon has it for £799, Panamoz has it for £599 which is where mine came from.

They only do one 150-500mm which is hsm and os( Correct me if I am wrong)
 
I'd be interested in this too as I have the same camera and find the 70-300 VR lacking a bit of length for things like drag racing

There is only one flavour of Sigma 150-500 - there is no difference.

Edit: But of course it comes with different mounts - but ALL are called '150-500mm f/5-6.3 DG OS HSM' and all have (from the Sigma website):

If your going to be working at 500mm do consider getting a decent tripod to go with it if you don't have one. I used to have the 170-500mm Sigma version and it takes some holding to keep it still. The OS version will still take some effort the hold after a time.

cheers Robbi reelspeed every one. got tripod is this to take the wight thinking of birds wild life fast moving so you still need tripod for that sort of stuff
 
Personally, for birds (and other stuff), I like to use a monopod. As realspeed said above it takes some effort to hold after a time (on account of the weight). A monopod will 'rest' the camera whilst still giving you relative freedom of movement. Also, a monopod can be considerably more portable than a tripod - I sometimes carry mine (leg retracted) attached to the lens collar with the head locked so that the monopod points forward underneath the lens - you can carry it like this with the shoulder-strap.

I almost only ever use my 150-500mm hand held, OK its heavy but you get used to it, I do use it on a gimbal in hides though sometimes
 
I used my 150-500mm oon the D3 yesterday handheld - just about to import to lightroom :)

Mine is the HSM OS version too

your right and wrong in pentax and sony mount the 150-500mm did not have os but it does now.

My bad - didn't know/remember about those two (probably on account of lack of relevance to me) and I took all the info from the Sigma site based on the current model. At least my statement still stands in context ;).
