I have had this lens a while, bought fairly cheap on E Bay. It doesn't seem to have a good reputation for sharpness but I thought it performed OK on my Canon 40d. Unfortunately it began grossly over exposing and I shelled out to get that sorted, then it was OK for while until the autofocus strarted malfunctioning intermittently and now most of the time. Anyone any experience in sorting this out, other than scrapping it?

Finally, just bought an old 5D mark 1 which seems great, but I have mainly lenses for a crop which I can't use. Would the 17-35 be OK on the 5D as a temporay measure, using manual focus?

The 17-35 is a full frame lens and it should work OK on the 5D, but to be honest they are so cheap on the s/h market you'd be better of buying another than getting it fixed. Actually, you'd be better off binning it and getting a Tamron 17-35 instead, not much more expensive and a very good FF wideangle.
 
Just to say that the Tamron, nice as it is, is a DX lens, and it will vignette horribly on a FX body (does on my D700).
The Tamron 28-75mm however, is a FX lens, and even better.

:shrug: no it isn't, you must be thinking of something else.
