The price of this fast lens is very reasonable as are the reviews. I appreciate that it is an efs lens but how does it compare with say the Canon 17-40L in terms of image quality?
 
Can't compare to the Canon, but I recently picked one up. It's sharper than the Tamron 17-50 2.8 it replaced up 'till about f5.6 and has fast, silent and accurate AF. I'm really happy with mine, absolute bargain at current prices.
 
I had the sigma on my Nikon D7100, a very good lens, it was on the camera 90% of the time, really liked it.
 
I have one on an 80d crop sensor canon, and its very reliable. Flare is terrible mind on sunny days. In fact, I recently knocked mine off a table at a restaurant, the hood took the brunt of the impact and it stayed in place, and hasn't had any effect at all on the lens, so I would suggest that it is well built. like others, I haven't had the L so cannot compare. hth.
