Anyone got one or used one? Just looking at some reviews and photozone rates it beter than the Canon 17-55 IS from f4 onward. High praise indeed.

thats a long story indeed :eek: as I the canon is reputed everywhere to be the king of the jungle followed by the tamron non vc.

I've used the Canon 17-55 IS lens and was pretty impressed but i think the praise it gets sometimes is a bit over the top. I think the photos from my 70-200 F4L were both sharper and had better colour. Just my opinion of course.

Photozone seem to get everything wrong. Put simply, their reviews are best ignored.
 
any review sites you would recommend? Photozone gave a big thumbs up to the 70-200 F4L and the IS version and both are superb. They also think the 17-55 IS is overrated and i tend to agree. Thats primarily why i tend to read their reviews. My experience with a few lenses seem to mirror their opinions.
 
There are plenty of review sites out there, but I can recommend some if you really want? I just seem to disagree with a lot that Photozone report (this is the site that only gave the Canon 10-22 3 stars for optical quality!), but each to their own!

Jim i would like to know which ones you like mate and i'll check them out. I had noticed the 10-22 got 3 stars and is highly regarded but as i've never used it i couldn't really say whether it was merited.

My experience is completely the opposite. So far their score is 100% in my books :thumbs:. I am not affiliated with them btw. Most other sites are generally less scientific or just a mere collection of personal opinions.

Just don't look at the stars that much, instead concentrate on the first two pages and carefully analyse the charts - the most important bit.

Ok ok, I acknowledge people do regard Photozone highly, and I do think they are very comprehensive in what they do, its just I dont understand some of their final conclusions!

I look at Dp Review, slrgear.com (small but balanced review site, linked to the imaging resource.com), for Canon stuff the-digital-picture.com. I do also look at Ken Rockwell and Bob Atkins, which I know often split opinion!
 
Hi Scottduffy- I'm also keen on this new sigma after not being excited by Nikons 17-55 at a Grand:eek::nono:

so heres a review that has helped me, also looked at some sharp pics on the flikr groups

Heres a quote from lenstips tech review
" In the frame centre the Sigma behaves better than more expensive constructions of Canon and Nikon. At the edge it is worse than the Nikkor but it can compete on equal terms with the Canon. In fact it doesn’t lag behind the competitors in any category and in some it fares definitely better."

not yet. still mulling it over and trying to find more reviews. i was hoping someone at college might have had one but wont know till next saturday.
 
Resurecting an old thread but just wanted to know, how did you get on with the sigma? did you end up buying one?
