I have been considering replacing my Sigma 18-50mm F2.8 EX DC MACRO with the OS version. I feel I would be gaining a lot by having the extra width (the 18-50mm is really a 18.5mm) and the OS will help with my landscape shots with narrow apertures.

I have read through the reviews and they are highly complementry. Has anyone used one? If so I would be keen to here / see real world opinions and sample shots.

The lens appears to be a real bargain at the moment.

Its a very good lens although I haven;t used it that much of late as I tend to use the Tamron 24-70 on the 5D for that range now - thats in no way a slight on the lens though, I just prefer the 5D and 17-50 isn't full frame compatible.

Looks good, I will have a good look through the images tonight and decide whether it's enough of an upgrade or not.

Out of interest - how do you find the OS system? Is it 'true' 4-stop, as that sounds too good to be true to me!!
 
Hard to tell but it was pretty good, if I had to guess from memory probably closer to 2 or 3 stops, but at that range OS is mostly irrelevant anyway as you're shooting faster than you'll shake.

If you are using 450D, you may want to be careful with the Sigma. I went into a store to buy one in Dec based on its good spec and reviews. After trying 2 copies with my 550d and a new 550d the store kindly provided, I found that all combinations yielded strange front-back AF problem: back at wider focal lenght and front at telephoto.

It could be that I was testing incorrectly or I was unlucky with that batch of lens, but I didn't take the risk and came out with the cheaper Tamron 17-50 VC, which focuses accurately in my test. I read that AF may be better with XXD and XD, but I have not tested with them.

Therefore, I would suggest you test before buying or buy from somewhere with good return policy.
 
Thanks for the input. I used the Tamron 17-50mm non-VC on my friends 400D and was not impressed with it. The focusing mechanism was slow and hunted all the time, is the VC version any better?
 
I bought one recently, but have only had the chance to use it once. On the day I chose to try it out, in the darker recesses of Durham Cathedral, I didn't realise there was a ceremony on for the new Bishop and I couldn't get in but was presented with the Bishop in front of me as I came around a corner. I just had time to grab my 7D out and take a quick snap or two with the settings as they were. It's not a great pic, but better than nowt and I am sure I will get some good shots with this lens in the future.
