Sigma 17-55 2.8 focus hunting and lock oof

I bought a 2nd hand one off eBay and it's doing the above. It constantly hunts through the focus range and then eventually locks out of focus. Very frustrating.

Does anyone have any experience, any solutions, or have I got a lemon.

I've tried it on both a D200 and D7200

I have the 18-55 2.8 and is was the HSM motor that was knackered.

Sigma will fix it for 109.99.
