Im looking for feedback on the sigma 17-70mm lens.

Does anyone own one and have an opinion on this lens, or can anyone suggest an alternative?

For the price, it seems very good! im into landscapes mostly but would use it as a general purpose walkabout lens.

Does this represent a good step up from the kit lens i currently have?

I would be using it on a D90

Absolutely superb lens for the money! Tack sharp and superb colour rendition - I've got the HSM version (which is well worth the extra money) on my D300 and it's very much my 'work horse' lens. Bearing in mind that I also own a Nikon 24-70mm f2.8 (my studio lens), so it takes a lot to impress me these days.

Buy it - you won't be disappointed!

Excellent general purpose and walkabout lens for the money, with 2:1 macro as well. Certainly a step up from the 18-55mm kit lens. :thumbs:
 
I have the non-HSM version of this lens and it performs admirable on both Nikons D50 and D200. Well built too.
You will not regret buying it!

I assume you lose the AF function when it's connected to a D50, right? I was under the impression that the non-HSM version needed a body with a motor drive...

I've had both, having 'upgraded' my non-HSM model to the HSM version thanks to the classified adverts on this very site. I moved the non-HSM version on as I found the AF a bit slow and noisey - the HSM AF is much faster, a lot quieter and doesn't seem to 'hunt' quite so much.

Here it is on my D300...

BTW - the camera is for sale if anyone is interested! The lens, however, will definitely be staying :)
 
Hi Bardo, sorry for late reply!

The nikon D50 has a motor in the body so no need for HSM.

For Ian's interest, you do need the HSM version if you want autofocus as the older lens will NOT do so with Nikons D40/40x/60/3000/5000.

Cheers for the reply - I didn't realise the D50 had a motor drive so I've learnt something today :)
