Sigma 17-70mm

Looking for a walk about lens, budget around £200. Would this fit the bill?

I had one on my 400D and 40D and I thought it was a cracking lens. Great close up lens as well. f2.8 at wide end only though so not so good as a low light lens but that didn't bother me as I had a 50mm f1.8 for that.

recently bought one as an upgrade from a 18-55mm lens and the sigma is very very nice, really sharp at 2.8 although it moves out of 2.8 at around 19mm!!! Its still a beauty.

Took this autumnal shot last week with it

Cheers for the replies, are there any other lenses I should consider in this price range?

It depends on what length you want/need - most of the others are either around the 17-50 range which doesn't give you as much length or else they're around the 24-70 range which is really intended for full-frame and doesn't give you the wide end.

I'm really pleased with mine and the extra reach, combined with it's macro abilities make it a really good versatile lens.

I've read it's also sharper than the Canon 17-85mm IS.
