Sigma 170-500MM lens for Canon EOS1000D advice needed please

Hello all, my first posting here. hope this is OK, but I am about to ask a bit of a daft question. OK, so I have a Canon EOS1000D and I fancy the Sigma 170-500 lens. All on eBay appear to be EF mount, which according to the Canon site is compatible with my camera body.

I have a few on watch, one listing said that theirs was tested on their 300D, was sold to a customer with a 600d and when tried, gave error message.

This has put a bit of doubt in my mind now as I'm a complete novice with a lot to learn. :bonk: Would a lens with an EF mount work?

Any advice welcome before I go and spend money I don't have.

Hi Anthony and welcome to TP :)

Yes an EF mount will fit on your body.

You need to know what the error / error code was as for any real help with that ...
 
Just to muddy the waters some early Sigma lenses work with film Canon bodies (EF mount) but do not work with digital Canon Bodies. I believe that Sigma used to "rechip" the lens so it would work with digitial bodies. I have a Sigma 80-400m lens and this works with the Canon 1000d
 
I had one and it worked fine on a 400d !....... A tri-pod helps at 500mm due to the lack of os and the aperture ....Great lens for the money .
 
hi anthony i have also been looking at the 170-500 the dg and the dc i think will work but im not to sure on the rest i did hear some sigmas dont work i dont know if thats true or not i have a 70-300 dg and it works on my 1100d so i would go for a 170-500 dg i would agree with ken the 150-500 is better and a bit faster same with the 50-500 but there twice the price
 
Don't bother, they're a beast of a lens ie weigh a ton, suffer from lens creep and are soft at the long end (over 300mm) to make things worse unless its chipped older ones will not autofocus with your camera.

I had a 170-500 and traded it in against the 150-500 OS and it was a significant upgrade. Were I to go back in time knowing what I do now, I would have skipped the 170-500 and saved for the 150-500 (or even the 50-500 which is supposed to be even better).
