sigma 18-125mm os hsm lens

I had it for a few weeks on my 40D, it was an improvement on my old kit lens (18-55) in terms of focusing speed and build quality, it was a little noisy and with some Sigma OS it buzzes a bit. The IQ was pretty much the same, not a bad walkabout but it wont blow you away. As you say its a very nice range if your only taking one lens on holiday.

I have one on my 7D 90% of the time, I've had it for about a year now and I can honestly say it's a super piece of kit and excellent value for money. A few small criticisms:
1) slight barrel distortion @ 18mm, but actually less than other lenses that go this wide.
2) The OS can sometimes take 3-5 seconds to kick in properly, when it's on though it's generally good for 2-3 stops. I often get keepers @ 1/15.
3) It softens out a bit @ 125mm, not disappointingly though.
4) Although the HSM is super fast and accurate, the lens focus ring turns, therefore no FTM :thumbsdown:
On the upside, the zoom ring is very nice to use, nicely torqued and smooth. there's a zoom lock latch to lock the lens @ 18mm to prevent zoom creep, not really needed though as mine never creeps anyway. It's also a nice light lens and the build quality whilst not bulletproof is very acceptable.
To sum up. I've often considered "upgrading" to the Sigma 18-50mm f2.8 HSM OS, thing is I just can't bring myself to part with this crackin' little lens

Full Time Manual (focus). It means you can nudge the focus manually even when you have single shot autofocus engaged.Just one question what is FTM? It's not a term I'm familiar with

You're welcome. FTM is Full Time Manual Focus. It's a slightly mis-leading term, I think it should be called Focus Override. It means that at any time simply by grabbing hold of the focus ring and turning it manually you can override the autofocus without the camera fighting back, you need to have camera focus mode set to one shot though otherwise it will imediately re-adjust itslef. It's very useful for those occasional moments when the camera makes a cock-up of focussing or simply refuses to focus on the point you want, so you give it a quick manual tweak and take the shot.
