Sigma 24-105 F4 Art opinions.

So I've just sold my 7D and Tamron 17-50 in preparation of upgrading to a 5D3 in march. I'm currently using my Eos 5 and 50mm 1.4 as I've set up my darkroom, so I thought I'd go back to basics and improve on composition.

As I'm mainly interested in landscapes I'll be looking for something wide. Was always happy with 17mm on a crop so I know I'll be happy with 24. I've been looking at two lenses, one being the sigma 24-105 art. The other canons new 24-70f4 (albeit about a year old). Sigmas Art lenses seem to get nothing but praise, I was hoping if someone has tested/used or owns one and could advise me if its worth a consideration above the canon.

At the moment the canon is winning but I have a bit of doubt in my mind.
 
I've not used one, just read the reviews. It seems a nice enough lens, very nice in fact and at least as good as the Canon optically, but nothing special like some other Sigma Art lenses. Compared to Canon 24-105L, it's also more expensive, heavier, takes 82mm filters, and is not weather-proofed. And it doesn't have a red ring ;)

There seems to be a few around, but Sigma has a problem ATM with production capacity keeping up with demand (nice problem to have) so is holding back on some of its less popular lenses, apparently including the 24-105.
 
I looked at both just in case I replaced my f/2.8 zoom. The canon f/4 seems to have better MTF graphs if you are thinking of landscapes. Sigma is more walkabout, lifestyle lens by the looks of it.

P.S. You'll be totally fine with 24mm widest. I very rarely go wider, and survived a whole summer in the picturesque highlands with 24-70 (and longer) just fine.

That's good to know, especially as the highlands are on my door step. The canon is and has been the main contender, I just seen the awesome reviews the Sigma has and thought I'd ask the experts :P

The weather sealing is a key factor I feel. So I'm deciding if I can deal without having that and always bagging the gear when it's drizzling.
 
I find it hard to purchase 3rd part lenses unless they offer notable IQ improvements, better build, faster apertures, or better price. With the Canon 24-105L being equal or superior within most of these areas that's where my money would if I wanted the 24-105 range.

Saying all that, I replaced my 24-105L with a Tamron 24-70 F/2.8 VC and could not be happier, but I rarely need >70mm. The ART is a good lens but IMO not significantly better that Canon's old and well proven equivalent.
