Sigma 24-70 f2.8 DF DG Aspherical. Nikon Fit. Any info?

My brother has just been offered one of these new and unused with a warranty from a reputable shop for £320 for use on his new Nikon D300S and I'd like to know if it's a good lens or not? It's not the Macro version or the HSM. Anyone used one and know what it's like? Thanks in advance.

Yep its a good lens. Some can be a bit soft so check that if you can.

Although mines sitting in the case now as I have a 17-55 2.8 which is awesome, but if I didnt have that then the 24-70 would be my preferred lens, at least for the work that I do.

Its a good price that youve been offered it for I think.

Thanks for your reply. This is an old stock lens for sale at an official Sigma Retailer and NOT the HSM or Macro version so is it the same as yours? Full title 24-70mm f2.8 DG DF EX Aspherical.

If so I own the Canon variant. If so, I'd say you're paying at the higher end of the price range, good ones go for around £250, but they go down to around £200 if you look around. It's without warranty, but it's a fairly big saving nonetheless.

I described it to my brother in detail and it sounds the same and comes with a green fabric carrying pouch with EX on it. It's built like a tank he said. So what do you actually think of the lens? Money's a bit tight for him at the moment and this would be his only lens. Could you think of something better at this kind of money or is this good value? Would he be better off spending a bit more for the Nikon 16-85VR, although that's not f2.8. He prefers to buy new and doesn't buy used.

Yep, that's the one, mine's got the green fabric case too. It's a good lens, less contrast and sharpness than the Canon and Nikon equivalents but at a tiny fraction of the price. It is indeed built like a tank, except it's larger and heavier than one :D

However, as his camera has a crop sensor, I'd say it's the wrong lens to be the only one. 24mm isn't very wide at all when on a crop sensor camera, unless he has an ultra-wide to back it up then he might not be able to fit everything in.

I'd seriously recommend the Tamron 17-50 f/2.8 (non-VC), which you can also get for around £200-£250. There's also a Sigma one (18-50), but I've never used that one. If the lack of warranty is why he doesn't want to buy used, then I can strongly recommend MPB photographic, I've had great service from them a few times, and all products come with a 6-month warranty. Their prices are slightly more than private sales, but you do get the warranty should anything go wrong. :)
 
Thanks very much for your reply, Chris. It sounds like a good lens for the money then. I think he can buy it for £280 brand new and boxed. At the price he's happy with the range and will find the 24mm to be wide enough but he's asked me to ask you if you think that the 16-85VR Nikon would take better images between 24-70mm than the 24-70 Sigma f2.8 he can buy now?
 
I used one of those on my D200 and D90 for most of my photos.
Its "ok", not stunning, but not crap either. Some do suffer from softness at f/2.8 and some all the way through. Its very well built and very heavy.

I also had the sigma 18-55 f/2.8, but it rarely got used. I found the 24mm wide enough for most things.
I wouldnt pay as much as they are asking for it though.

Thanks for your reply. How much do you think he should be paying for a brand new and boxed one from a Sigma Official Retailer?
 
That's VERY steep for the older model. I'm not surprised they still have it on their hands!

As for macro very poor substitute better to in vest in a nikon 50mm and extension tubes for the 1.1 and a reversing ring for ultra macro on the cheap

Ok thanks. He's been told he can have it for £280. Actually he may already have bought it but not used it yet. Perhaps he should ask if he can change it for a 16-85VR Nikon for about £120 on top?
 
I cant really quote a price for that version, as its been superseeded by at least two newer models. I remember selling mine for about £180 3-4 years ago, and it was in mint condition. I guess add a bit on as it direct from a shop with warranty.
