I had a damaged version of the above, are the later versions any different?
a nikon version would be nice, but even s/h would be out of range

i don't know about the Sigmas but most people on this forum recommend the Tamron version over the Sigma, that's why I bought the Tamron and it is a very nice lens for the money.
 
i have the sigma and it is lovely. there are some detailed review videos of the sigma vs tamron vs canon vs Nikon on youtube.
i went for the sigma and saved half price compared to the nikon -which allowed me to go for the tamron 24-70 f2.8 too :)
