I did the thing you should never do.........borrowed a friends 24-70 f2.8 L:nono: I am now looking for a 24-70 lens, the L is out of the question as I have recently upgraded to a 1Dmk11N amd a 70-200f4 L. I want f2.8 throughout the range and the sigma fits the bill - it's also listed as a macro. The cheapesr i have found is at digital rev but before i go ahead has anybody got any reccomendations for something else (has to be EF fitting) or a different supplier?

I have one at work and its horrible. Its sharp when stepped down but the build quality is nothing on the canon l range. It felt like a kit lens to me.

But some people love them...
 
Optically, they're very good but they're big, clunky, noisy beasts... I had one and whilst I was more than happy with the quality of the images, I really got fed up with having such a lump on the front of my camera. The newer HSM version is supposed to be a lot better but I've not had a play with one of those so I can't really vouch for it.

My local camera shop, Carmarthen Camera Centre had a couple of secondhand ones in recently but I can only see one listed HERE at the moment.

If you're not desperate to have f2.8, you may be as well to consider the 24-105mm.:)

Thanks for the replys, I had looked at the 24-105 but really would like f2.8. I realise the quality of the sigma will be nowhere near the L lens but it's a 1/3rd the price. Thanks for the link spiritflier - thats only £20 less than the new price :)
 
I've got one of the Sigma HSM 24-70 versions, and it's absolutely fantastic on the D700. So, either I've got a very good example, or the newer HSM model is an all round good egg.
 
I've have the older model Siggy, And its not a bad lens.
Would love the Canon one, but can not afford it yet.
(I dont think there is anything that can touch the Canon version.)

I've just posted one for sale over in the for sale section.

A lot of them are a bit sticky at the bottom end of the zoom range and this on is, on occasion a bit sticky.

They are a bit of a bargain though and optically they are Ok :)
 
Not the macro version? What do you mean by a bit sticky? Do you mean when zooming in and out?
 
i used my one for the first time last night, when zooming back to 24mm it would sometimes be a little tough to zoom back in again, not too hard just a littl eharder then usual.
 
I had both the 24-70 and the 28-70 and they were sharp and well build.
Changed to the 18-50 now as I do not have a FF camera anymore and I am terribly happy with it on my 7D so only good experiences with Sigma lenses on my side :)
 
If you want to stick with Canon L series take a look around for a used 28-70 2.8L. If you can live without the 24-28 range it could be the answer.
 
thanks for the link BouncyMelons, I might have a look at the 28-70L - not something i had even considered. The more I look the more confused I get lol
