Yes
similar to the 70-200mm thread below - I think my next purchase will be the Sigma 24-70mm for my brand spanking D300.

To be honest i have heard good things - but reading online reviews of lenses has aged me about 4 years. It seems to range from horrific to sublime in the space of half a webpage!

Was just wondering what people's experiences on here with the lens are (i trust you lot more than randoms on the world wide global hypernet). The few people i know who have one have all praised it to be fair, happy days.

yes, i know it isn't anything on the nikkor 24-70, but then nothing is i guess!

any thoughts appreciated.

#1, Don't forget that for it to AF on the D40, you'll need the HSM version, although for the D300, that's not necessary.

#2, To avoid getting a "dodgy" copy, try the actual lens you'll be buying before parting with any cash/handing your card over. That means buying from a bricks'n'mortar shop rather than over the net, so it's likely to cost a bit more but IMO, it's worth it - a: if a problem does develop, it's easy to return it to the retailer and b: local shops WILL vanish if they're not used and they're far to useful to lose.

Enjoy the lens, and use the saving over the Nikon equivalent to get places to use it!

2 Versions of the Siggy, apparently the latest is better all round. Sadly though much more expensive.
Might be worth considering a used Nikkor 28-70 2.8, found mine mint at £695
I don't miss the 24-28 end.

Yeah i've got one of these for my Canon EOS 40D, bought it 2nd hand off Ebay, have got some great shots in the time i've had it that im happy with, very sharp, crisp & clear images.

I have heard the same that it depends on the copy you get...I guess you should try before you buy :-)

Hows the D300....used it much yet ?

I have briefly, I'm going out this evening to shoot the resevoir next to my house, i'll let you know how it goes and show you some pics. The autofocus system appears to be brilliant, but brilliant the way the universe it - amazingly complex and i just don't know how it all works!

with regard to the nikkor 28-70 - i have seen those and just a bit out of my price range (i have a young daughter and get glares from the missus when i mention buying more expensive kit!) - might be worth looking at that as an upgrade to the sigma though, ta!

is this lens famed for having some 'dodgy copies' then? The person who i might be buying it from has been extremely helpful to me so far and not in a 'buy my stuff' type of way, so i don't think i have any worries on that front.

I hear that wide open it can be soft - although stopping it down and cranking the immense ISO capabilities of my D300 might work!

ta for the thoughts

I got one about five months ago but the autofocus has stopped working so need to send it back now, very disappointing.

Was loving it beforehand though. Excellent in low light but have found when wide open that you get a lot of flare. Am hoping it comes back good as new.

There are definitely dodgy copies out there unfortunately.
