Sigma 24mm f1.8 EX DG - Anyone got/had one?

Looking for one of these for the 500D and can't decide between the Siggy and the Canon 24mm f2.8. I have had the Canon 24mm before and was very impressed with it but had a 24-105 also so it never really got used much. The IQ was very close to the L lens! So before hitting the button i thought i would see what the Sigma was like compared to the canon.
 
I have the 20mm f1.8 which I believe is similar and I think it's great...

but I just wanted to say that although I love my fast primes I just don't see the point of a 24mm f2.8 when there are several really good f2.8 zooms to choose from. Of course a f2.8 macro makes a lot of sense and maybe a non macro f2.8 prime makes sense on a full frame camera as the full frame zooms can have a few problems at f2.8 and 24mm but on an APS-C there are maybe better options.

Just a thought.
 
Bit of a bump as, FWIW, I'd also be interested in answers to this question.

Reviews on Fredmiranda, THD and Photozine are not overly-favourable, have to admit.

My current thinking is that purchasing this lens is a bit of a waste of money which would be better put towards the Canon 24L. Would LOVE to be convinced otherwise though.
 
The Canon 24mm f2.8 is only a couple hundred quid and the L f1.4 is a grand more!!

I find the focal length pretty much perfect for me and it's also a case of size and weight. The Canon would be smaller and lighter the the Sigma so I'm leaning more towards that.

I will prob get a zoom at some stage but for now the 24mm is top of the list.

FWIW, I have the fantastic 16-35 f2.8 II and want something faster for gigs and weddings arond this FL.

I appreciate the price difference between lenses but similarly find that if I get something that does not quite do a job then it is money (partialy) wasted (with postage costs etc..) as opposed to saving up for the right gear in the first place.

Still, would love someone to show some Siggy 24f1.8 shots to convince me it is a quality bit of gear wide open.
 
I'm now thinking it may be a bit daft just having 1 focal length especially when you consider the Tamron 17-50mm is f2.8, the same as the Canon and at a similar price. But then again the Sigma is f1.8!! hmmmmm
