Sigma 300m F/4 Macro HSM only works open wide

Just managed to get one from eBay for very cheap, but it will only work at F/4.

Does it need chipping? And if so, how and who does this?
 
Is this for a Canon camera? You have to contact Sigma about it, but you may find they can't do it any more - that's certainly the case with the 400mm f/5.6 :(
 
Yep, it's for a 40D.

Its no major issue if they can't, I have a Tamron 28-300 that will do F/6.3 @ 300, but I'd rather use the prime (obviously) if I can. Its still very usable at F/4.

I'll get in touch with Sigma and see what they say

Didn't come with lens caps (although is immaculate), so I've ordered some, and no tripod mount, but at that price, I'm not complaining.
 
Just spoke to Sigma, apparently there is no chip available for it anymore.

Annoying, but as I say, I have a smaller aperture 300mm lens too, so I'm not that upset!

I assume there is no way of fooling the camera in to changing the aperture?
 
What about jamming a piece of a match stick in to hold the aperture slider,back of lens? People do similar when reverse mounting lenses for macro.

Do Canon fit lenses have an aperture slider?
 
Doesn't seem to be any moving bits at the base, just electrical contacts.

I know people have had the Lens chipped, but obviously Sigma don't do it anymore. Are there any third party companies that do it?

Would be great to see some images taken with the lens! I'm thinking about finding 1!!
 
Sure, I'll take some later.

As I say, its a lovely bit of glass (fair weight to it though!), would just be nice if I could change the aperture.
 
Yeah me too. Most people buy an f/4 to use it at that. I know it'd be nice to stop down on very bright days, but you'll have faster shutter speeds and be able to keep the ISOnice and low ;)

Oh yeah, I'm quite aware of that. Its a hell of a lot of lens for £84!

Another thing it didn't come with is a tripod mount, any ideas which one fits?
 
I'd like to get one, but maybe try someone else's first on it, to make sure it works!

Am I right in thinking it would make it a 420mm F/5.6?
 
Any sign of those sample shots yet would be nice to see what it's capable of!!
