While it depends on what your shooting and where I would always plump for the 300 f/4 IS. Much smaller and easier to transport. It is slower by a stop but you gain two-four stops with the IS (depending on what you are shooting as to whether IS is actually useful). The big plus however is the size IMO.
I used to have the Non IS version of the 300 f/4 and it was beautiful.

The sigma is a cracking lens for the money on the used market.
