Sigma 30mm f1.4 v Canon 28mm f1.8

Hi guys.

I'm looking to get a standard prime equivalent (erring on the wider side) for my 7D, mainly for low light and/or indoor shooting. Currently my main lens is the Canon 24-70, and whilst it is a fantastic lens :love: , it’s not exactly subtle (at nearly a foot long on the “short” end) or light weight.

I’ve heard a lot of good things about the Sigma 30mm, but it is specifically designed for crop sensors, and whilst I haven’t got any immediate plans to go FF, I’m trying to make lens choices with a view to the future.

On the other hand I’ve heard very little mentioned about the Canon 28mm, which makes me a little wary of it.

Anyone got any opinions on IQ, focusing speed and softness wide open (or a stop or so down from wide open) between the two lenses ?

The crop design of the Siggy may not be a deal breaker (as I'm looking at least a few years down the line before even contemplating going FF), but if the Canon 28mm matched it on IQ and focusing speed, it would certainly give me pause for thought.

I have the Sigma 30mm f1.4 and think it's good but I know what you mean about FF compatibility.

How about a Sigma 28mm f1.8? I have the similar 20mm f1.8 and think it's great, no HSM though but you do get a hood and a case.
 
I had tried the Sigma 30mm f1.4 on my 7D and found the auto focus to be a little slow, resulting in quite a few out of focus shots. Admittedly, it was used for taking mountain bike images, but it was quite slow in the auto focus area.

I changed for a Canon 28mm f1.8 - much better in my opinion. Fast auto focus - spot on.

Image quality - there's little in it - but for me I need fast , reliable auto focus.
 
I've not tried the Sigma but have the Canon 28mm f1.8 and have used that a lot lately on my 30D and now my 5DII. It's a lovely lens, well built, quiet and fast focusing and I have no issues with the IQ at all. Used it a little this weekend instead of my 24-70L and it reminded me how much more "fun" primes are as you have to moooooove yourself :)

So for me, the Canon would be the choice... but then I haven't tried the Sigma as I mentioned ;)
