Hi guys anyone familiar with this lens? I've been offered one but they don't know if it will af with the d7100, it has a red ring round the hood if that means anything

Sounds like the older non-telemacro non-hsm version. I would skip it if I were you, not a very sharp lens and AF is slow and noisy. If you find the telemacro hsm version get it especially if it had been chipped to work with Canon digital cameras (old versions only work open wide with digital cameras, except the 1d, 1ds, D30 and D60, all of which are over 10 years old)

I had 1 of these for my canon it was really good! Only problem was it only worked at f5.6! Some of them do fully work if they've been chipped! Not sure if this applies to Nikon!
As an example this is the copy I had it was the newest version.

Forgot to say I have nikon, Ill skip it and wait till theres a hsm macro version, not a lot of choice really for cheaper 400mm, can't justify the more expensive gear unfortunately

No hsm version was released for Nikon. You can get the telemacro one for Nikon. It is sharp and works well on digital BUT auto focus is slow and noisy I am afraid.

Oh right maybe need to look for something else
