Hey up..

im in the process of moving over to canon and looking for a nice telephoto lens... i would love a 100-400 L but cant afford....

just wondering what peoples thoughts are on the sigma 50-200 f2.8 and sigma 120-400?

i will have a 10-20mm and a telephoto lens..i would be thinking of running the 50-200 f2.8 with a 2x adaptor to give me 400mm [and in effect 2 lens so i dont have a massive gap between 20mm and 120mm!] does anybody have experiance of this set up. how will the 2x tele affect the image quality? like the idea of a smaller lens as the 120-400 is heavy and big...

would i be better with the 120-400? both options will be around the same cost.. the 120-400 would give me OS but for motorcorss, cars etc i dont think OS will be much benefit to me?

do you mean the 70-200mm f2.8, if so its not goos with a 2x its suppose to be great with a 1.4x, as for the 120-400mm it will be better longer end and if ou get the os version it will give you os to.

cheers for your thoughts :) i would have thought the 2x would have lost some quality... i guess it makes it a poor quality... 120-400 it is then! :)

I've got the 120-400mm and it's a cracking lens for the price. You have to watch Sigma though as quality can sometimes be a little hit and miss.

The 120-400mm has 2 OS modes, the same as most longer zooms. The second mode only corrects vertical movement as any horizontal correction will cause havoc for panning shots. The OS is very good and you can shoot handheld at 400mm with shutter speeds as slow as 1/125.

Excelletn choice, works a treat with a 1.4x

No OS though, which is a shame (likewise on the other 'big' sigma lenses...)
 
I have a sigma 120 - 400mm DG IS HSM canon fit and have been very happy with the results (see my gallery / threads), will be putting it up for sale on this site (hopefully tonight) to help fund purchase of a 300mm f2.8, if you are interested keep an eye out on the for sale section later

need to pick up a 40d body 1st! :0 but will keep an eye out for your sale as could be interested :)

will look into the 100-300 F4 as well
