Sigma 50-500 arrival date confirmed!

Hmmmm... I ordered something from them about a year ago and was told it was in stock. After a few days, I rang to chase the item and was told it was on its way to me via RM. Couple of days later, I spoke to someone else and they told me they were expecting stock in the next few days and that I was near the top of the list when their stock arrived. Hope you get better service than I did.

they never stock anything
i ordered once from them, never again

To be fair to them, I had used them before and as well as being extremely competitive on price, the goods were delivered with no problem and fast. The fact that the waterproof camera ceased to be waterproof after a couple of years can't really be blamed on them!

Ah well you live and learn. After talking to a rep this morning on the phone and being told he will have the lens by Weds, I come home to an email to say its out of stock and they have no estimated time of taking delivery of anymore - apparently its on backorder so I have to sit tight and wait.

I'll be cancelling that then first thing, and asking for my grand back thankyou very much. I've found the lens in stock elsewhere, slightly more expensive, but it seems if I want this lens I'm gonna have to fork out, rather than buy from sites that say they have it and really don't.

Won't need it, your camera body does it at the sensor level! :D

I'm fairly certain that for an Olympus fit the OS is not built in as the camera bodies have IS in it!
the new 50-500mm does on all its lenses even pentax and sony mount 2 which have sensor stablisation,

The OS (Optical Stabiliser) function offers the use of shutter speeds approximately 4 stops slower than would otherwise be possible. For Sony and Pentax mount, the built-in OS function of this lens can be used even if the camera body is equipped with an image sensor shift anti-shake system. As compensation for camera shake is visible in the view finder, the photographer can easily check for accurate focus and ensure there is no subject movement.

doesnt look like there doing it for olympus.

thanks for the info, any ideas why, if the bodies have it built in?

The more important point was improved optical formula. Soft lens is a doorstop regardless of any OS / IS / VR system.

The new version wont be available for 4/3rds - so for Olympus users, instead of ridiculously priced Zuiko long glass, this is my only option for longer than 300mm.

why not 150-500 then? You can't really expect quality of 10x superzoom. I tested 50-500 in a field and was really 'impressed'. >2x downsized photos just about matched my unedited cheapo 70-210 photos. So you are effectively getting 200mm max resolution off that lens.

In lens OS is still useful on bodies with it built in - turn the in body stabilisation OFF and use the lens's system; the viewfinder image is then satbilised which helps the AF system as well as giving the user an idea as to how well the stabilisation is working.

The Pentax version of the 150-500 has OS built in but not all K-AF mount bodies have in body stabilisation - do ALL 4/3rds bodies have it?

Bristol Cameras you are always best to phone up to order to check stock. I phoned up at lunch last Tuesday, asked for next day delivery, received items 10am next day. Brilliant!

(If I had ordered online though there would have been a few extra items 'in stock' I would have ordered which weren't actually in stock. But if it is in (again best to phone!) they are really quick with dispatch. Really friendly too.)

AndyElliot probably knows, I am under the impression though that the vast majority of, if not all of, 4/3rds bodies are sensor stabilised. I might be completely wrong though.

Quick update :

Cancelled with Bristol Cameras. Phoned Chris at SRS Mircosystems as per ecommendation above and he got me a lens just like that. He physically has one and I'll have it by the end of the week.

Thats how business should be done imo. Thanks for the recommedation Scotthehat, I'll be phoning Chris in the future :)
not a problem effjay
i use srs for all my gear there always great, also there a petax and olympus pro dealer, i know that means 2 years warrenty with pentax stuf, might be worth cheeking if that counts for olympus stuff for future olympus purchases.

Good contact to have, he pulled the stops out to get the lens from his Sigma agent as he had none in stock. I was stuck in a server room nestled behind a Cisco 2921 when he rang and gave me the good news. Nice to see people go a bit extra to get the sale.

Extremely soft and lacks contrast? Hmm, I'll have to think about that!
