I have had one in Pentax mount for about 3 years now .. it has outlasted 3 bodies and each time it has performed better than on the previous camera.
I managed to pick one up in Canon mount a while back for not much money but as I have only recently bought the 50D I haven't had much chance to use it as they really do like very good light.

Personally I think the 50-500mm is slightly better than the 150-500mm which in turn is better than the 120-400mm. You have to offset that against the fact the 150-500mm has OS while the 50-500mm doesn't. I use it hand held which is not a problem on my Pentax as it has inbuilt SR but there is no way I could shoot at the speeds I do on the Canon.
One taken today on my 50D .. nothing special, weather was crap, the birds were in the shade and I had to push the processing but anyway ...

I have the 150-500. I haven't used the 50-500, so can't give you a comparison, but I can vouch for the usefulness of the OS.
Given the average UK weather we "enjoy" I find myself shooting at very slow shutter speeds @ 500mm. Often below 1/200, without OS I'd have to give up & go home hours early!

I went through 2 150-500s on my 7D before settling on a 50-500 EX. Both copies I had of the 150-500 were very soft and I was never happy with them. Swapped my last one for a 50-500 and the difference blew me away, although it does still need to be stepped down to about F8 to get the best out of it. Sure the OS was handy on the 150-500s but I've yet to really find it much of a problem, if I can't keep it steady for some reason I just break out the mono/tripod.
