Sigma 50-500mm Lens

500mm is pretty long for football in my opinion as the action happens all over the pitch.

Give something cheaper like the Nikon 70-300 VRII a go. I shoot rugby with one and I've never really felt the need for more reach.

You'll save the best part of £1000 and I'd guess that the image quality will be at least as good.

Very slow lens, f6.3 @ 500mm, so unless you have some perfect conditions, not sure it would be fast enough, especially for night games under flood lights. I've not been impressed with the action shots taken with this lens, however as a wildlife lens for the money, probably can't be equalled
 
Got to agree with other posts it is probably to long for football and definitely to slow unless the light is really good,for football I have recently moved from an f4/5.6 zoom to am f2.8 and the difference is amazing.I suppose it depends on how serious you are about football but for a couple of hundred pounds more than you would pay for this lens you could get the Tamron 70-200 f.2.8 and something like the Sigma 150-500 or the Tamron 200-500 giving you much more flexibility
 
I'm not a follower of football so have never shot a game, but the range is fine - just because it can go to 500 doesn't mean you have to and could give you some unusual shots, however as others have said speed would be the issue if anything.
 
Thank's everyone for the feedback, I was sort of hoping speed wouldn'd be an issue :'( but it seem's it is. I'm using the Tamron 70-300 kit lens that came with the d3100 at the minute and its not to bad if the conditions are right, but I feel it's being pushed to its limits for fast action shots and I get a low percentage of acceptable shots. I def like the range the lens gives me so I guess I'll digest all the the advice you have given me here and rethink..oh :bonk: I've ordered the D7000 so the new lens will be for her :thumbs: ....some of my pics from saturday....http://flic.kr/s/aHsjz2824S
 
One thing to add is that f6.3 is the maximum aperture way before to get to 500mm, it usually kicks in before 300mm. I've used the lens for cricket and polo but those sports are played generally in much better light than football. As has already been said, a decent 70-300 will be much cheaper and be way more suitable or, if you want to spend 50-500 type money, a Sigma 70-200 f2.8. Lss range nut te sort of speed you might need for football.
 
If you can afford it, get the Nikon. You won't regret it and it will last you a lifetime. Also, should you need to sell in the future, it will retain good value and sell easily.
If you can't afford it, get a good used vrI. Still a superb lens.

Or even an 80-200 AF-S. They're quite rare but also worth looking out for.
