There was a thread a little while ago about these:

I think these were okay at the time but expectations have moved on a bit with the latest wave of 150-600 type lenses.
50-500 is an amzing range to have but I would say IQ and AF are just okayish.

I've just got myself the 50-500's older brother, the 150-500 OS, and they're similar by most accounts. As a hobbyist photographer (with pro experience) I would say the af/os of the lens are fine, not perfect but fine, and it is very sharp. Heavy though. Perfect for my occasional use but it might be worth spending on something newer if its for professional/every day use.
