Right ive almost got enough money to fund for a new lens,

Does every one still recomand this lens?

Beside defects to the lens do i need to look out for anything?
i.e the OS ive heard about?

Cant think of any other qestions atmo!
Trying to ask early qestions before regretting later!

I will be shooting wildlife/motor sport and mayb some air days.
Ive looked at the 200mm but ive spot to wildlife shoots and they all say aim at 400mm or more for the safe side.

Scott im after which any one is best performing idealy.

Will be used on a canon 1000D until i upgrade after all my lens are bought -.-

Well we have the non os version and its a really good one now stays on sons camera all the time.
After seeing the os version and what that is like I am now going to get the os one. shopping around for a good price at the moment.
On a 7d the os lens is actualy lighter than a 7d and canon 100-400 combination which is what Im using at mo but I do so miss that 50mm . Its ok folkes saying take 3 steps back when you are doing wildlife most times you cant.
 
both the os and non os are just as good as each other, the older version is f4 at 50mm were the newer version if f4.5 at 50mm but the newer version has os which is very good, mike has the advantage of using the older version as his pentax camera has built in shake reduction, which is great for wildlife and stuff like that but for sports like football rugby and motorsprot pointless, Also the older one if you can find one is about £500 were as the newer version is about £1250 from a retailer but this guy on ebay has them at a really good price.

personally mine is my fav lens even over my nikon 28-70mm f2.8 and my nikon 70-200mm f2.8

That's a good price but I'm concerned about the wording regarding warranty. ie. Shop warranty?
 
Well sadly my budget is more like around the 500/600 mark.
And idealy iam looking at 2nd hand too,
So im guessing the "os" one is out of my budget?
 
Same here mike, Ive also scanned ebay and dont see any 2nd hand.
And even if i was heading up towards 800+ i would might as well look at a 100-400 in a way.

So is there anything really agest the "non os" version?
Or anything i need to look out for before bidding?
 
Hi! I have the Sigma 150-500 and I brought it new for £700 from Camera World in Chelmsford, if that's within your budget, I have found that I tend to use this more than any other lens as I walk around a lot of nature reserves, whichever you go for they are about 4lbs in weight so some extra padding in the neck strap is an idea! The OS motor does make a bit of a whirring noise but when I have come back chuffed to bits with some great shots it is worth every penny!
 
Another vote for the 150-500 OS here. I picked mine up from the classifieds on here for £545 RMSD in an as new condition.

You have to ask yourself is that 50-150 zoom worth paying double the price for?

How much would you need the focal length of 50-150 if you're doing wildlife. Mine stays between 400-500 99% of the time.

Sigma 50 - 500 ( Prices from £450/650 mark)
Sigma 150 - 500 ( Prices from £500/600 mark )
-Prices from completed sales lowest first.

Now i know it all goes on the person/con/from/time ect ,
But even paying another £50/100 or even less for a lens what would do 100m shorter start zoom cant be a bad thing is it?

And infact im also sure i wil also always be well above 200mm but its the incase somthing is in your face meoment you dont have that worry of "swapping in a rush".
 
The prices you're quoting are for a 50-500 NON-OS and a 150-500 OS.

That's what makes the difference.

When you're up at 500mm the OS system is a must for most people.

A 50-500 OS is what costs £1000.
 
The OS is Optical Stabilization.

When you're shooting at a focal length of 500mm the slightest movement in the camera will produce blurred shots unless you have a high shutter speed. The OS in the lens counteracts any camera shake, allowing you to use lower shutter speeds.

Therefore if you don't have any OS in a lens of this size then you best have a steady hand/monopod/tripod.

Personaly I have OS with my 150-500 but I still use a monopod with it, other people use the non-OS versions with a monopod and still get good images. The OS makes it easier to get them.

I absolutely agree that the extra 100mm would come in handy, it's just whether it's worth the price difference for how often you'd use it.

In my case I decided no.

The OS would be a bonus i guess really,
I will be using it on a tripod alot but you never know with wildlife!
I think its gonna be a case of see what i can stech to,
Personly i did't want to spend past 600 but ill watch ebay for a few days and see what comes across.

So the OS 50-500's are 4.5/6.3
And non OS are 4.0/6.3 Right?

Would just make it 10x faster looking then with out having to ask the qestion :)
 
Hi! I did a lot of homework before being my 150-500 and I would recommend the OS lens if you are intending on shooting nature/airshow etc as I am always at the 400-500 end rather than at the 50mm end,I brought mine with a monopod which has helped and also can take some of the neck ache away! I have just looked through some old copies of Digital Photo and they rated this lens highly and I have been really happy with the results.I did manage to get some filters for £20 from Amazon (UV and polariser) last year rather than the more expensive ones which kept the price down.
 
Interesting thread, as I have been looking at the 50-500 OS Lens as I will be going on safari next year, and I would not really want to be changing lens outdoors all of the time out there.
 
Was going to get a 50-500mm OS version, even went as far as the local shop for a try before you buy. Then I went to waddington airshow and borrowed a canon 100-400 L from the guy sat next to me. After comparing the shots from the 2 I plumped for the canon. So much sharper at the long end and focusing was faster too.

I was going to buy the OS version but then i seen a the non-OS for £400 buy-it-now.
With nothing wrong with it, Cant miss the chance so will keep it while i get used to my first long lens,

Once again great help every one as always :)

Yeah total reading fail,

Either way heres one of many shots i took with this lens on the day day of getting it, Might make a post with all thies qestions to help others as i looks like it comes across alot!
 
Do it, I've been trying to way up getting a nikon 70-200mm 2.8 or a sigma 50-500mm the sigma would be great for wildlife but the nikon would be better for sports. (struggled this week with early and evening wakeboarding shots). Couple the nikon to a teleconverter and it'll be a 400mm 5.6. With excellent IQ
