Yes
hi all are these lens any good, have read a few reviews it's macro i am after, i have extension tubes, would i be better with a nifty+ ext or the sigma at true 1.1.

i may go for the sigma because reviews say it's a cracking 50mm very sharp, and you have the macro as well,

then i can hand over the 50mm 1.4 to son number 1 on his b/day  just have to get it back off him so i can wrap it:lol:

I don't know anything about macro photography but I've just ordered the 90mm f2.8 tammy from jessops. they've knocked £100 off the price and taken it down to £250! I think the key is having a long enough length to not need to get too close to the subject hence why I'm going for the 90mm.

I have the 50mm and it is a very sharp lens, I don't use mine nearly enough. If it is a 50mm that you want with a 1:1 magnification you will be more than happy with it ;) if you want a sample shot at 1:1 let me know and I will post one up for you.

Hi yes but the siggys only £130.00 EXDG (full frame) £250 is way over my budget. is the 90mm true macro...

Hi yes please, my thoughts are. Spend most of time with family while out and about,i like to take macro, but they want to be snapped as well, i like to keep lens on the 5D with out changing outside (Dust Freak) i think this will do both, i am close< get the pun<<

Merc

I will take a shot with it on the 5d at 1:1 then in a mo ;)

CGeezer has one and from what I have seen it looks pretty good. I would put it at least on a par with the AF 50mm f1.8D (obviously the Nikon camp here). Much better built though. Not had enough of a play to say more but people don't sell them on to often which is always a good sign !

at the photo shoot you did earlier this month would you say the 50mm would be up for it, or at least stand a fair chance, do you think it would be ok with falsh???

Sorry which photoshoot? I would happily use the 50mm Sigma in any situation where 50mm was an appropriate size. It is a clear pro quality lens full stop!

Merc:thinking:

That is next month :)

and YES I would be happy to use that lens there. I will have my AFS 50m f1.4G on the F80 on that day for some studio film work and this lens is comparible with that.

OMG i am a month behind  or in front, beam me up scotty

is it winter yet :suspect:

Merc:lol:

It would have been this month but I am in bed for 2-3 weeks after an op hence the delay. Gives more time to sort everything out though.

Oh right well get better soon , well i have just bought one £135.00 pounds, going to be delivered Tuesday. this solves two probs my b/day gift to son number 1, and a versatile lens,

well i better come then if theres room, i can offer a lift with anything i have a volvo estate if any use to you.

is that a good price ????

50mm is really way far too short for macro. 100mm is too short on FF, with 50 you will be nearly scratching your front element at 1:1 magnification. 150-180mm is the way to go on FF (or 100mm on crop).

son number 1

Off-topic: I can't stop thinking why you always refer to him like that? Does he have a name or is that how he is called ?

My lens of choice for macro and which gets a lot of use is my Nikon AFS 105mm f2.8G - This is an absolute stonker of a lens and it is another one that doesn't come up second hand very often. I would say that from using the 105 of FF it is the minimum focal length that I would want personally, I would prefer maybe 150-180mm but it depends on what you are shooting really. My photographic work is in forensics during the day so it is actually ok for the day job :)

will have a go with the 50mm, i take your point about 150mm-180mm but in my earler post i mention a sort of jack of all trades lens to suit our purposes, and to remain on the body while out and about,

Cheers Ian,

will macro tubes work with this lens ??????,

Merc

Tubes will work with any lens but they reduce the amount of light getting to your sensor from the subject so they end up needing a longer exposure or more light! Also avoid the seriously cheap ones as they have been known to loose lots of metal filings inside your camera.

For flowers and other non-moving targets the 50mm will do fine but will be extremely difficult to use for insects etc on a full frame camera

hi used to reverse mount a nifty on a crop, got to be better than that .

Merc

Both tubes and extenders work with the 90mm, the other bonus is its lighter than the 105 sigma and also doubles as an excellent portrait lens.
I have to admit when I had my previous DSLR, the tamron 90 macro was hardly off it, I used it for nearly everything

Thanks Ian that's the conclusion was coming to in my previous post, kind of a jack of all trades for me with less hassle, but giving pleasing results, and for £135.00 quid lighter on the wallet too.
