I have a chance of getting a sigma lens for a cheap price, I've been told it came off an Olympus dslr, would this fit onto a Canon 400d?

I don't think this will fit your Canon, so steer clear.
If you want a bargain lens, look at the Canon 55-250mm IS. Great value lens at a great price although not quite the £15 in your advert.
