Sigma 70-200 2.8 OS vs Canon 70-200 f2.8 IS mk2

Hi all,

Thinking of taking out Jessops finance which means I will be able to get one of the above two lenses. I definitely want f2.8 for the DoF reasons and also speed advantage.
I've read countless reviews on both lenses, the general opinion being that Canon is better - but in real world shooting (ie, not shooting test charts!) that the Sigma is just as good.

There's a lot of money difference between them..I'm just wondering if it was YOU what would you get?

I bought the siggy, cracking lens. BUT if you don't have a body with microadjust then be prepared to fudge about getting it sorted before you use it.

I bought mine to use with a 50d with microadjust and it was fine, until of course i bought a 1ds and it front focused. It took 2 trips to Sigma to get it sorted, the second sending my 1ds with it to have it calibrated to that body, now its spot on.

I'm in the same boat as the OP. I have 2 Sigma lenses, both of which are excellent.
The Canon lens needs no pushing, it is brilliant but bloody expensive. The Sigma has received some very good reviews and is very tempting.
I may well go for the Sigma as it is a lens that won't be used too often, I prefer to shoot landscape with my 17-70 or the 10-20 f3.5.

The Sigma lenses are good when they work but god help you if you send them back for Repairs. You can be weeks waiting and it may not right when it get's back. Canon are a few days turn round also another downside is Sigma are not licensed by canon so they backwards engineer their lenses to fit this is the reason you sometimes have to send them back to have the chips upgraded. Image quality is normally almost as good
You pays your money and takes your choice But im afraid i will always pick Canon first

I have a couple of Sigma lenses as backup to my Canon ones and they have been fine

Out of three Sigma lenses I have owned, two of them had/developed problems. My oldest, a 70-200mm f2.8 (pre-macro) has worked perfectly for 3 years and I have never had an issue with it. My 18-50mm f2.8 worked fine until the zoom ring broke, and when I upgraded to full frame I purchased a 17-35mm f2.8 which front focussed.

So if you can test out the lens first on your camera body and you can see it focusses fine, then you will probably be OK (and if you're buying new or from a dealer, it would be covered under warranty if it breaks). But I personally will be sticking to Canon lenses (apart from my Sigma 70-200 for now) because my 16-35L and 24-70L are perfect!

Be VERY careful where you buy the siggy 70-200 if you do, some places sell you a European model and don't tell you (Amazon), the only way you know is when sigma have it for repair and refuse to give you the 3 year UK warranty but only a 12mths one instead.
