Sigma 70-200 2.8 - Talk to me

As Terry Tibbs would say... talk to me. I'm thinking I would like to buy a 70-200 2.8 again. I have played with a Sigma and quite like it. Owners out there... what do you think? I'm temped also by Canon 70-200 F4 which is sharp but I would prefer the extra DoF of the 2.8.

I currently have 100-400 and 24-105 so kind of have the range covered but something about 70-200 makes it handy. Do I need it?

You're thoughts?

Plenty are happy with their's as was i, when i had one....But then again, plenty are not...

There should be loads of threads on here discussing the lens......
 
Had the sigma Ex DG Macro HSM II version (that's a lot of letters!!) and it was good but replaced it with the 70-200 L IS version and much preferred that.

If it were between the Canon f4 and the sigma f2.8 though I'd go for the 2.8 every time. Though lugging around the extra weight isn't an issue for me.
 
Its a fantastic lens, love mine.

But as others have said, this comes up all the time, best do a quick search rather than post up as this has been discussed to death.
 
I have the 70-200mm F2.8 II APO EX DG Macro and have found it to be really good.The only problem is the weight but I can live with that.
 
Sorry chaps, I didn't realise it was such a common one. Have done a quick search and it does seem to be quite a range of opinions. Generally speaking though everyone rates the Canon's.

Just curious why did you replace if Sigma was good?

Yeh don't think it's worth me getting a 70-200 unless it was 2.8 - given the lenses I already have. The Sigma 70-200 I played with was first generation one, looks like some people seem to rate the old ones more than the newer Macro enabled ones... !!!
 
In the end it comes down to cash.

I think everyone would agree that if money was not an issue they would go with their body makers lenses 100% of the time but for most people this is not an option which is why the likes of Sigma and Tamron do so well.

There is nothing at all wrong with the Sigma 70-200mm f2.8 (I have the first generation model), it is quick, sharp and well made but if I were a Canon owner and had the cash I would go for the 2.8L lens every time. After all, Canon should know their cameras better than anyone.
