For lenses that are designed for full frame, so is the hood. When you put them on a crop format DX camera than only uses the centre of the image, the hood can be made bigger without it encroaching into the image area.
Bearing in mind that the hood on a zoom can only be optimum at the shortest focal length anyway, it not going to make a huge difference. As far as I know, Sigma is the only manufacturer to bother with it.
