Anyone use this lens on a canon crop body? How do you find it?

By the way it's the non os variant.

I'm trying to decide between this, a canon 70.-200 f4 is or the 70-200 f2.8 non is.

I have the Sigma and its a great lens. It's a little soft wide open even after MFA on my 50D. Pin sharp at f/5.6.

The Canon will most likely be sharper, more compact and has IS.
 
I have this version (which is also labeled 'macro' though it's not a macro lens!) and it's brilliant, on both my cropped and full frame Canon's. Mine is also very sharp wide open though this varies between lenses on this version. Overall it's very, very sharp.
 
I've just had the EX DG HSM Macro (1) and it required micro adjusting but once it was adjusted it was pretty good, sharper at f4 but still perfectly useable at f2.8

Its weighty but not too heavy, focuses quickly too.

I sold mine and bought a longer lens for wildlife and i didnt really get a change to use it for any serious work but it was pretty good :-)

Thanks guys. There seems to be so many versions of this lens that I'm worried about buying a lemon.

The one I'm looking at is mint condition and selling for 399 so it's more than the canon f4 non is but cheaper than the is version and the f2.8 non is so just weighing up the value.

I didn't think the mk1 70-200 was designated 'macro'?

There aren't that many versions (discounting the old IF version, the mk1, mk2 HSM macro, and the mk3 OS version), but either way they are all good!

For clarity, mine says
"SIGMA APO DG" on one side of the plastic window
"70-200mm 1:2.8 II MACRO HSM" on the other side of the window
"EX SIGMA" on the side.

Strictly speaking, as mentioned above, it's not a true 1:1 macro lens. If I recall correctly, 1:4 life size is as close to macro as it can get. Closest focusing is just under 1m from the front of the lens or about 1m from the film/sensor plane.

This is a test shot I took when I first got the lens.

its a good lens :), you could check on dyxum.com for reviews too, has smoother bokeh than some of the other 70200s
