From what I know of this lens being used on the fourthirds mount, it's a little bit soft wide open. A 15MP 50D is about the same pixel pitch as a 10MP fourthirds, so that is probably a fair comparison.

Read up on the coating, I hope they've fixed it now, but I've read about coatings on the EX lenses peeling (mine is a 80-400 EX DG and has peeled). It won't affect the operation of the lens, just the resale value, but I think Sigma have a 3 yr warranty (?) (mine is older than that).
Edit: I mean the black coating on the barrel.

Love mine, Had it about 10 months, I have not found that mine is soft, plus it takes sigma's 1.4 TC really well aswell.

I am new ish to this hole photo thing but got my self one and am very happy with it. I was using a Nikon 50-200 kit lens and could not shoot anything faster than a snail to save my life. I got the Sigma 70-200 and even with a old Nikon D40 on auto can get ok shots all the time. I am over the moon to say the least.

It is a very good lens, i love mine and very lucky to buy one for £350 off taz, it can be great in low light indoors and very sharp outdoors for motorsport/action etc.
If you can get hold of the mark II buy it you won't be disappointed.

Does it have the aperture control ring near the mount or is it still camera controlled?

Is that the one that has fully manual aperture control with an actual aperture ring? I really like lenses that do that, but I hear this version of the lens is lacking in quality compared to the II. I am looking to upgrade to the II as I am aware my current telephoto, an old galaxy, isn't exactly top of the range, and the zoom might be useful.

as far as i know none of the recent (at least since the DG 3-4 generations ago) 70-200 had that?

okay it's just because I saw this and wondered.

as you can see it's got totally manual aperture control.

must be an older version, but i like lenses that have manual control over the aperture - saves using the DOF preview button.

Regardless of whether or not the lens has an aperture ring, you will control the aperture via the camera. If it has one, you set it at F/22 and use the camera controls.
