Sigma 70-200 F2.8/Canon 70-200 F4L

Hi all,

I currently have a Canon 70-200 F4L and as much as I really like this lens I am thinking of swapping it for the Sigma 2.8 version. Mainly because I do a lot of off road cycling pictures and find myself in the woods quite a bit and think the F2.8 might help just that little bit more.

Do you think it is worth it? It wouldn't cost me much to change over to the Sigma.

If you can deal with a slight drop in IQ and autofocus performance combined with extra weight as a tradeoff for F2.8 then it is definately worth it.

I found the IQ to be as good as the mk1 Canon f/2.8 and the AF (which is lighting fast) to actually be a little faster on the Sigma. The only trade off is, apparently, build quality.

That is good to hear, helps me greatly in my own purchasing decision.
I know the F4L is sharper than the F2.8 but again, not by much but...

How is the sigma for tracking focus? This is where in the past I found Canon had the edge - one shot lock speed there was never anything in it but servo was not so good.

No problems there either, I'm constantly using it with Servo AF.
 
On the same topic, how does the Sigma lens compare to the Canon 70-200mm f2.8L IS MkII? Is the high price of the Canon justified?
 
I have the Sigma 2.8. I was in the intending to buy the Canon 1st gen f4 but finished up going for the Sigma as I was shooting model planes in low light and have found the Sigma to be first class. Tracking, quality and speed are brilliant. Couldn't recommend it highly enough considering it is half the price.

I would stick with the L lens and buy a flash gun instead, or 2. I think that would make more of a difference than a change of lens.
