Sigma 70-200 f2.8 v Canon 70-200mm f4

Just started shooting weddings, I have the 20-200mm F4 which outside is amazing and sharp but inside sometimes I have to ramp the ISO up, should i chop it in for the Sigma f2.8 and gain a extra stop, will i see much difference. In time i'll hopfull upgrade to the Canon 70-200mm f2.8 but thats in the future. :thumbs:
 
If it was me,i would just keep saving till i could adford the Canon one,i had a lot of problems with a Sigma 70-210 F2.8,in the end i brought the Nikon one :)

I didn't see you in Newton Abbot a couple of weekends ago did I?
The photographer there was shooting with the 70-200 F4 in the church and I thought he must be struggling!

IMHO if you get a good copy of the sigma then its a fantastic lens, especially the macro I and II versions BUT they are very hit an miss with quality control...

The canon 70-200 2.8's Non-IS can go for around £650-£700 used so it might not be as much as a leap as you think... I have it and personally can't fault it and mine is ancient! Although people do say the F/4 can be sharper... we have both so I can test if necessary!

No not me in Newton, I love the 70-200mm F4 but sometimes it struggles in low light, might have to be the f2.8 version now :thumbs:
 
I have the Siggy.

Absolutely suburb. Fast, sharp and silent. New for new, I wouldn't pay the extra for the Canon, having used both (f/2.8).
 
For weddings especially indoors, f2.8 or better is the way to go, so 70-200mm f2.8 IS would be the better solution, or a series of faster prime lenses like 50mm, 85mm, 135mm, 100mm or 200mm etc
 
Depends on your body, and the iso you can push.

for me the sigma 70-200 2.8 is a great lens

they might be 'brilliant' but Sigma still falls short long way of canon f/4. Canon mk2 IS is the answer, keep saving.

No way does the Sigma fall short of the Canon f/4, that's simply a ridiculous statement.! Especially in low light...

I've been looking at the canon and sigma versions both F2.8
the reviews I have read suggest the canon is better
and sigma have a lot of issues with quality good ones and bad ones
I was looking at a new sigma but after alot of research have decided to go for a used ef2.8l IS USM
purely because of the consistent quality shame they didn't make them in black lol
 
I'd get a second hand sigma, it will let you get the shots you want now as opposed to a canon in a years time and if you buy used it won't loose much of it's value in the meantime. Once you've had the f2.8 I'm sure you'll realise it's not just the performance inside but also the subject isolation outside that make it so popular with all the wedding togs.

The Canon 70-200's are definitely superior to the Sigma versions but by how much is open to debate and all the talk of quality control issues at Sigma is blown out of proportion in the standard internet way, besides if you go used you get to see it's a good one before you buy.
