Sigma 70-200 HSM dead?

So im gonna give Aperture UK a ring tomorrow as thats where I purchased the lens from second hand a little over 6 months ago.
But I took the camera to a wedding yesterday and was going to take a few snaps, and as soon as i put the lens on my d300 it would not AF at all, no noise, not struggling, just..... nothing. (it was as though it was in manual focus mode)

Just wanted to rack some brains to see if there is anything i could try or anything that may be common that im not aware of.

My 50mm was working fine, i gave the contacts a clean on both lens and camera, gave it a wiggle, push and twist...... nothing it just wont autofocus at all. The aperture ring is fine, you can use it manually, not stuff or stuck.

Im furious because its just out of its 6 months warranty, it cost me £300 and it will be nearly as much to send it off to sigma for repair i bet!

i might post this in the wedding forum so all those weekend warriors with 1 lens and 1 camera realise how ****ed u would be cause gear does just die for no reason! I treat my gear sogentle and last time i was working absolutely fine, its not been bashed or dropped.

Mine did that, also at a wedding.
Insticnt kicked in, and I twisted the lens a little and I heard a click.

The lens, either wasnt attached properly in the first place, or had somehow come loose during all the commotion.

However, it seems you have covered those bases, so I'd say the AF motor is fubared.

Sigma have a price list on thier site for common repairs of most lenses.
 
I had the same problem with mine, contacted Sigma sent it in they fitted a new focus motor £131.99 returned in a week. Same problem happened again within a year sent it in again replaced focus motor again FOC, cannot fault their service and quick turn around.

great thanks for the help. guess ill be without it for a few months then. no way ive got 140 this time of year! thanks sigma!

It's not just Sigma, my "bullet proof" Canon 85mm had a similar failure...
 
My £800 Nikon 16-35 killed itself and my d700 when a tiny screw fell out and caused the lens to spin freely on the mount.


It's not just Sigmas!
 
it might not just be sigma. but it is my sigma! haha. i know it could happen to anyone. guess i can be thankfull i havnt got anything on over the next few weeks. ill ask them.if when they replace the motor they could adjust the lenses AF with the camera so its spot on when i get it back. seeing as it was back focusing beforehand. maybe even aperture photo in london may as goodwill as its only a few days out of warranty do something. but i feeltl thats pretty hopefull.
 
might also check home/credit card for any insurance that might cover it. altho i think home insurance has a like 200 excess on it. hmmmmm
 
Is certainly try aperture first! If its only a few days they might help.
 
If it was used when you bought it and they only offered you a 6 month warranty they're probably not under any obligation to help you out but if they're a reputable company it would be good for them if they did, even if they offered to pay part of the repair cost.
