Hi all,

Looking towards this lens for my Motorsport Photography, having often low light in the woods I feel this lens would help having the larger aperture.

What do people think to the idea?

Does anybody have any sample Rally/motorsport shots from a Sigma 70-200mm 2.8?

Really appreciate any input, i'm doing homework until the New Year when I'm treating myself to a belated xmas gift lol.

Oh, and I'm open for any alternatives suggestions too...

Thanks very much :)

very very fast autofocus too, makes the 55-200 look very slow.

I use one for football every weekend nice piece of kit.

Thanks to everyone who has replied, much appreciated.

Definately liking the feedback so far, looked around and found out how to view images from lenses on PBase too, so that's good, soome nice looking images out there that would please me!

Phil...just had a look at your flickr...are those football ones the 70-200mm you mentioned? Very sharp indeed if so, exactly what I'm looking for with regards to my Rally shots ;)

Was reading somewhere recently a review of the Sigma 70-200 2.8, came out very good, they said it was not quite as good as the Canon 2.8 - wasn't far off at all and it's much cheaper

It's an excellent lens, focusses well and fairly fast, it's sharp, and pretty well built, and more affordable than the canikon offerings, even second hand.

Buy it second hand and ask for sample pics at 2.8 at 70 and 200mm and look for general softness in each of the pictures, but you should be fine.

I used one for the first year of wedding photography which is a bit removed from rallying but I found mine was great. I also have the Canon f4 and the Canon 2.8IS so I've done a fair bit of comparisons before I eventually parted company with the Sigma. I only sold it because I got a cracking 2.8IS and I'll find the IS handy for shooting hand held at weddings. I found my Sigma to be really very good and shot to shot at 1/100 sec almost as good at the Canons. The greens I found a little more muted but only very slightly. It's only down around 1/60 sec and lower that there is any real performance advantage with the IS on the Canon.

go for the siggy, sure you will love it!

all the images on my site are taken with it(motox) and find it no probs at all!
one of the other MX togggers uses one in all weathers and says hes had no probs(ive not been brave enough to try that yet without the rainsleeve!)

Yes.

ive also been looking at this lens, has anybody paired it with the siggy x2 converter, if so was auto focus still fast, and was IQ badly effected?

I tried a 2x with it and found it a poor combination. If you want 400mm+ I went for a 100-300 f/4 with a 1.4x, you have to stop it down to get good results and you also need good light.

Thanks to everyone for replying, I think I'm dead set on getting one now, very happy with what I've read and seen.

Will be looking New Year time, once xmas is out the way, and will ask around on here first for anyone who is selling :)

Cheers
