Sigma 70-200mm f2.8 upgrade to Canon 70-200mm f2.8?

Hi everyone, upgrade question!!

I currently have a Sigma 70-200mm f2.8 APO DG HSM lens in great condition, not sure of the date of production. I use it for shooting sports and I have no massive complaints, although sometimes it's a little slow to focus, and the zoom is a little bit to hard to move to zoom in and out very quickly as I often need to do in football matches. It is pretty sharp, nothing to complain too much about again. I have used a Canon 70-200mm f2.8 and it just felt a bit more responsive, faster to focus, quicker to zoom in and out and a little bit sharper in general.

So I'm thinking about selling the Sigma and buying a second hand Canon. As it's mostly for sport, I'm not fussed about IS so I'm looking at a Canon 70-200mm f2.8 L USM lens dated 2010.

Any advice? Would you see this as an upgrade or is it more of a side step?

for the extra 100 quid or so the IS ( ver 1 ) demands i would spend the extra
iv'e owned both and the IS version is definitely worth paying the extra for it's slightly sharper wide open and the IS works quite well
obviously the mk2 IS is the best of the lot but there's a 4 - 500 quid premium to pay over the price of the mk 1

iv'e not used the sigma version so can't comment about that

Tend to agree with Mark, if you were going to upgrade, I's either upgrade to the mark I IS version or save up and go for the mark II version - if you can wait and save up, this would be my choice...
