Sigma 70-300 apo or canon 55-250

I was thinking of getting a telephoto lens for travelling, and have come across the sigma and canon. Its fairly similarly priced with the canon being a little bit more because of the IS. Has anybody had a go at these two lenses?

I'm an amateur with a canon 1000d, nifty fifty and sigma 18-50 2.8 and can't really afford the 70-200 f4...which will be a definite buy for me once I get a bit more experience..and cash....Thanks!

55-250mm is a fantastic lens for the money.

I have the 70-300 APO sigma lens.
I think it's brilliant, has a nice feel and produces nice photos.

The only downside is it does hunt a little for focus
