Sigma 70-300mm APO F4/5.6 - How to check if chipped?

Hey all :)

Looking at buying a Sigma 70-300mm APO F4/5.6 2nd hand as a cheap means to get some extra focal length whilst saving for a better lens, have found one 2nd hand for a good price which is about 2 years old. I understand some people have problems with them on Canon and get ERR 99 faults and some had to be rechipped. Is there anyway to check this before I go ahead and purchase?

The owner at the moment has had it from new, its about 2 years old and works fine on his 400D, I will be using it with my 40D. Any help appreciated :)
 
I thought the same as I believe they came about around the same sort of time, will try get the serial and give them a call
 
Even if it hasn't been chipped, it's no big deal so long as you shoot manual - the problem is some sort of communication error, where the camera tries to set an aperture the lens can't handle (ie it goes for f4.5 at the long end) simply setting the aperture yourself solves the problem.
 
If it is two years old it will work.

The Error 99 problems were with lenses that were produced prior to the release of the EOS 10D/EOS30 which are the ETTL bodies. Canon made some changes with these bodies and the older sigmas stopped working. Sigma resolved these issues not long after (wisely). This was around 2003
