lookign to get a new lens and one of my options is this Sigma 70-300mm F/4-5.6 APO DG for my Nikon D90

Whats peoples opinions on this,

My other choice was the Nikon Zoom-Nikkor Telephoto zoom lens - 70 mm - 300 mm - F/4.5-5.6 - Nikon F

The only issue for me is cash at the minute, do i wait and save the extra for nikon or is the Sigma a good altrernative

Thanks

I have one of the none APO ones and its one of the worst lenses I have ever used. I am also not the worlds most skilled photographer. But it is terrible compared to my other Sigma and Nikkor lenses. I would get the Nikkor if you can afford it and if not new then used as there are many about. The APO one may be better though?

Try the Tamron 70-300mm out..I found it a better lens than the Nikon 70-300mm...
Its got great optics for the price but not the fastest focusing lens in the world

If the subject your trying to shoot with it moves faster than a snail you would be better off sketcing it the af is that slow .

take that as a no then...whats the tamron like of AF then?

I have the nikon 70-300 vr and recommend it, Vr is very effective and its a nice sharp lens.

How much money could you likely get together?

I had a Sigma 70-300mm and loved it to bits, got many good shots and sold some Rally ones on more than one occasion...but I wanted something quicker and sharper, so went for the Sigma 70-200mm 2.8.

Well worth it, esp since the 1.4x TC will take it to 280mm @ f4.

Or above, the 70-300mm VR would be a good choice, cheaper too than the 70-200mm :)

at most im looking to spend about 3-400, ideally i need the reach of a 300mm as i had a 200mm and it wasnt giving me quite the reach i needed in some places, its mainly going to be used for wildlife etc, but i need it to be fast enough to be able to deal with motorsport and possibly planes as these are 2 areas im looking to get more into.

Go for the Nikon 70-300mm you can get a mint used one for under £300 from ffords and similar sites
